Assistant Gardener

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Assistant Gardener to work alongside a Head Gardener on two private properties in the village of Knowl Hill, Berkshire (in between Henley-on-Thames and Maidenhead)

The first property encompasses a formal garden, kitchen garden, orchard, poly tunnel and surround paddocks.  The second property encompasses a formal garden, kitchen garden, year-round poly tunnel vegetable production and meadow fields.

Candidates must be enthusiastic gardeners, honest, reliable and capable of delivering an high standard of work.

The new Assistant Gardener will work under the direction of two Head Gardeners but must be able to work alone when required.  Duties will include weeding, digging, mowing and a wide range of other horticultural duties as directed by the Head Gardener.  This is a rare opportunity for an Assistant Gardener to improve on their existing skills and knowledge.

Applicants should have some plant knowledge and be able to demonstrate an efficient and practical approach to their work.  Good physical fitness is required as the position will be physically demanding at times.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be an advantage (but not necessary), as would experience and competence with mowers, hedge cutters, strimmers and blowers.

The employers are keen for the applicant to improve their knowledge and skills and are happy to invest in training programmes where appropriate.

Applicants should primarily be passionate gardeners with a genuine interest in horticulture, with a desire to learn and improve on their existing gardening knowledge.  Applicants with experience of working on private estate gardens are encouraged to apply. Energy, and a sense of humour are important.
