Sole Gardener
An enthusiastic and hands-on Sole Gardener is required on a full time and permanent basis to maintain and develop the gardens of a beautiful private Estate situated near Dorking, Surrey.
This traditional English Country Garden covers about 1.5 acres surrounding the main house and is privately owned. The garden contains expansive lawns, lavish herbaceous borders are complimented by a wildflower garden, roses and a series of mixed beds and borders, kitchen garden with a fruit cage, a small orchard, and a swimming pool which is managed separately.
The garden is part of a wider estate of 600 acres. The Sole Gardener will join a team of 3 working on the estate. The owner is passionate about her garden and enjoys working with the gardener on ideas and plans for the garden. The Sole Gardener will have a hands-on role in the daily care and continuous development of the garden. They will be someone who takes pride in their work and will maintain the garden to an excellent horticultural standard. Occasional weekend work in the summer may be required for watering. Additional duties include feeding the 4 – 6 chickens and occasionally walking their three Labradors when the owners are away. This responsibility is split between the team.
The ideal candidate will have an academic horticultural qualification and experience working on a private estate. He / She will be able to identify a wide range of plants, pests and diseases, together with knowledge of their requirements to thrive. Experience maintaining herbaceous borders, shrubs and kitchen gardening is required. The successful candidate must be enthusiastic, physically fit and confident working autonomously. PA1 and PA6 chemical application for pest & disease as well as CS30 and CS31 chainsaw certificates are desirable however training can be provided. A full driving licence is essential.
This is an excellent opportunity and would suit someone with a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. There is a wide range of garden machinery available for use and the gardener will have the ability to operate and carry out basic maintenance of the garden machinery.
A cottage is provided rent free with the position should the successful candidate require. The property is 3 bedrooms and council tax will be covered by the employer whilst all other bills will be the responsibility of the tenant. Partners, children and pets are welcome.
SALARY: Circa £30,000 depending on experience plus accommodation
