Website Mexborough Estates

A rare and delightful opportunity has arisen for an experienced and hands-on Head/Sole Gardener to manage a stunning 4-acre private estate garden; as well as assisting with the maintenance of 5 holiday cottage gardens, and the wider public realm in this quintessential Estate Village in the beautiful North York Moors National Park.

The romantic multi-level family estate garden features lawns, herbaceous borders and ancient cloud yew hedges as the main focus of the role.  Further informal garden areas containing greenhouses, vegetables, a fruit orchard and cutting garden are enhanced by water features and the surrounding woodlands. The woodlands host a renowned commercial pheasant shoot and as such an understanding of country pursuits is required.

The family has a desire to convert the garden from an annual to perennial-focussed space in order to reduce overall maintenance demands, so your informed technical and practical input will be required here.  The position would suit a practical, knowledgeable and physically fit gardener/horticulturist who is happy to work alone and under their own initiative. External assistance may be brought in to assist with light maintenance, though you should expect to manage the garden predominantly alone on a full-time basis.

You must be a resourceful lover of the outdoors, happy to work in all weather conditions, tidy in your work and proud of nurturing gardens to the highest standard.  You must be organised and able to manage your daily time/work schedules effectively. The ability to prioritise seasonal tasks and submit suggested orders/budgets for required plants would be helpful. You should have particularly good plant knowledge, propagation skills and an associated awareness of northern climatic conditions.

A 2-bed semi-detached cottage in close proximity to the gardens can be made available with this idyllic position

Salary: £28,000 DOE + Cottage (if required)
