Website ecgrecruitment English Country Gardeners

A fantastic opportunity has opened for an experienced Sole Gardener on a stunning 15-acre estate near Cirencester, responsible for maintaining a beautiful 3-acre garden. This is a permanent, full-time position offering either live-in or live-out options.

Surrounding the property are picturesque pastures and the 3-acre garden boasts an array of features including a historic 180-year-old wisteria growing on the front of the house, expansive lawns, mixed beds and borders, vegetable garden (parterre and pots), a tennis court, swimming pool and water features, and various terraced areas. There are two glasshouses, one for seed propagation and the other for growing produce such as tomatoes, chillis and peppers. Additionally, the gardens include a fruit cage that requires restoration, as well as pleached hedging and a mix of young and mature trees scattered throughout the estate. The estate is in an area of natural beauty and attracts a range of wildlife.

The gardens have been enhanced in recent years with assistance from external design consultants. There are plans to add additional beds and borders once the gardener role has been filled and the appointee will be involved in the implementation of these plans.

As this is a sole gardener role, additional responsibilities may be required such as general handyperson duties as and when the season allows, clearing and preparing garden furniture and occasional driving. This is a dog-friendly environment as the owners have a working cocker spaniel and a Norfolk Terrier. The Sole Gardener will ideally have a flexible and adaptable approach.

The successful candidate will be passionate about plants, physically fit, and have proven experience working on private estates. Minimum qualifications will include chainsaw certification, RHS level 2 and spray certification. The estate owners are willing to support further training. They are excited to build a strong, friendly relationship with the new gardener and appreciate the dedication and pride taken in maintaining their beautiful grounds. The estate owners employ a full-time housekeeper to look after the house.

A full driving license is essential, and a DBS check will also be required. The working hours are full time 37.5 hour per week with full days Monday to Thursday and a shorter day on Friday.

SALARY:  £35,000 to £40,000 depending on if accommodation is required
