Sole Gardener
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an ambitious sole gardener to manage and maintain an incredible garden with huge potential near Exeter in Devon. The position is full time and permanent.
The estate is set in a peaceful and secluded area and consists of about 2.5 acre arboretum and 2.5 acre formal gardens. The gardens are on a slope and are divided into rooms that flow around the farm buildings which include a long vegetable garden, cut flower garden, rose terrace, pond, mix beds and borders, wildflower meadow, apple and pear orchard, hedges, extensive lawns and swimming pond. There is also a wall beautifully covered in lavender creating a feature towards the entrance of the house.
The owners are very passionate about their garden and describe it as their ‘principle solace’. The are looking for a gardener who will share their ambition and become genuinely engaged with the garden to take it to that next level. The gardens are currently kept private but the owners would like to open to the NGS a couple of times a year. The position also involves additional duties on the estate and would suit an allrounded gardener with a practical mindset. They will occasionally assist with some logging in the winter, mending a fence and can dive a tractor / mini digger for turning compost.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with flair and the enthusiasm to maintain the garden as well as develop the new areas of the garden such as the woodland garden.The role would suit a knowledgeable, active and self-motivated gardener with hands-on experience, as well as a proven ability to work well on their own. Additional staff can be brought in during the busy season if further assistance is required.
Suitable candidates will hold demonstrable experience in a similar role as well as academic horticultural qualifications at level 2. Efficient planning and an associated knowledge of plant behaviour throughout the seasons is important. Spraying is kept to a minimum on the garden, therefore knowledge of organic pracices would be advantageous. The owners would be happy to support any further training requested in relation to the garden. Driving licence and experience using and basic machinery maintenance is required for the position.
SALARY: £30,000 – £33,000 depending on experience
