A fantastic opportunity has become available on a beautiful private estate Southwest of Basingstoke, Hampshire. The position is full time and permanent and the owners are looking for a Gardener with experience and a genuine passion for horticulture to maintain and enhance their garden.
The traditional country house is surrounded by mature and well kept gardens that extend to approximately 7 acres including ‘The Long Walk’ and arboretum extending to the north of the property. The remaining 5 acres consist of an area partly walled, with an enclosed kitchen garden, fruit cages, greenhouse and 2 polytunnels. The garden area to the south of the House (which is east facing onto Parkland which forms part of the farm) consists of lawns, shrubbery, herbaceous borders with shrubs and low growing plants. There is a long south facing formal border, and an east facing border with high brick wall. There are managed areas of long grass with spring snowdrops and daffodils planted out with formal trees, and a wooded area at the end of the garden.
The whole garden and Long Walk is stocked with mature trees with new planting and restocking trees and shrubs. There are three large area of lawns to the south, west and north of the main house, swimming pool and tennis court. The soil type is free draining and alkaline with some areas neutral. There is a machinery and equipment store, with a wide range of suitable equipment for the garden’s upkeep, strimmers, hedge cutters and Kubota ride on lawn mowers. The gardens are kept private but the owners encourage small groups who visit an adjacent recreational facility to use the gardens.
The current gardener will be retiring in September and the owners are ideally looking for a gardener to start at the estate on the 1st of October 2022. The day to day role will entail kitchen gardening, high level maintenance of the formal gardens including specialist pruning, weeding, hedgecutting and an element of enhancement is encouraged. The Sole gardener will have some assistance from an apprentice on the gardens.
Applicants will ideally hold a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification with good plant knowledge and experience working on a private estate. PA1/PA6 spray certificates would be an advantage. Experience with pruning and growing fruit and vegetables as well as the ability to operate a range of garden machinery and a driving licence is required.
This exciting opportunity comes with a competitive salary and the accommodation provided is a 3 bed cottage adjacent to the kitchen garden rent free service occupancy, water rates paid and Council Tax paid. Partners, children and pets are welcome.
SALARY: £30,000 – 35,000 depending on experience
