An incredible opportunity has become available for a full time and permanent Skilled / Deputy Head Gardener to join a team on a beautiful private estate in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
The garden is approximately 35 acres plus woodland and water meadows. All areas are maintained along organic lines, with the good-sized vegetable garden subject to Soil association inspection. The main formal gardens have extensive lawns and borders. Hedges, including Beech, Hornbeam Yew and box frame the garden; some of these are over 5 metres high. A large water garden and water meadows, lakes and large wildflower meadows continue the garden in a less formal manner. An Isabel and Julian Bannerman designed Swimming pool garden is an exciting recent addition. The house and garden are alongside the river Avon providing a peaceful aspect. Three good sized green-houses and a poly tunnel provide a productive heart. The gardens are continuing to be developed.
The Skilled Gardener will report to Head Gardener and will also take instructions as required from the owners and Estate manager. He / She will maintain the gardens to a high horticultural standard including all usual gardening tasks as expected in the role of skilled gardener. Basic help and instruction to be given to junior colleagues, under supervision of the Head Gardener as well as supervision of the team in the absence of the Head Gardener. Presently the gardens team is 6 full time with some part time help. Very occasional non gardening work elsewhere on the estate where needed.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2-3 years full time experience, in similar large gardens and an RHS level 2/3 or equivalent required or similar intensive work experience.
Experience and interest in plants and borders required, excellent plant knowledge highly desirable as well as knowledge and experience in the care of lawns. Greenhouse and propagation experience and growing fruit and vegetable is desirable. Experience using wide range of garden machinery is essential and experience working at height, chainsaw and PA1/PA6 desirable. Training given if needed. Practical knowledge and experience of health and safety at work is required. First aid at work qualification, desirable.
A competitive salary is provided within the guidelines recommended by the PGG for skilled gardeners. 40 hours per week, generally 8 am to 4:30pm, ½ hour for lunch. There will be a requirement for weekend duty and bank holiday working on a rota.
SALARY: Up to £32,000 D.O.E.
