Skilled Gardener

  • Full Time PRIVATE AD
  • Up to £24,000 DOE
  • Gloucestershire

A permanent full-time Skilled Gardener is sought after to join a small friendly team maintaining a family owned estate in the Cotswolds.

The 96-acre estate consists of rolling parklands, formal lawns, immaculate hedges, small mixed borders, a small orchard, a beautiful and productive kitchen garden, mixed and conifer woodlands and cascading natural ponds. There are also a few farm animals kept as pets and dogs who live in the house.

The garden team is lead by the Head Gardener, and the ideal candidate will be excited about gardening and looking for a role to get their teeth stuck in to. The estate is kept to a very high standard across all areas, and an eye for detail is key.

The estate is developing, with a designer led large scale pond project currently underway, more large projects to begin and owners who welcome ideas and inspiration to develop smaller areas in-house. The successful candidate will be heavily involved in the running of the kitchen garden and will have input into the development of a small cutting garden, as well as the day to day maintenance of the estate and supporting the head gardener when needed.

Likely regular duties to include lawn edging, border maintenance, weeding, clipping topiary, pruning, watering, greenhouse management, assisting with the care of the farm animals. There is a full time grounds and maintenance person who completes the majority of mowing and lawn care but assistance will be required from time to time. Applicants must have good all-round gardening skills, be physically fit and comfortable working alone at times. Estate work is varied and some flexibility is needed, occasional ‘other’ duties may be required such as driving errands, assisting the house staff moving furniture, harvesting vegetables, cutting flowers for the house etc.

The garden is equipped with a range of machinery hence basic knowledge of most powered garden tools and experience using them safely is a must.

Applicants will have a relevant horticultural qualification, ideally level 3 or above and proven experience as a gardener within a team. Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) are a must and chainsaw and tractor tickets would be an advantage.

This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and driven gardener to take the next step in their career. 8-4 Monday to Friday, with very occasional weekend work, some flexibility required.
