Website ecgrecruitment English Country Gardeners

An exciting opportunity has become available for a self-motivated and driven Senior Gardener on an incredible estate near Marlborough in Wiltshire. The Senior Gardener will continue to develop, enhance, and maintain the stunning grounds and gardens, overseeing one other gardener as well as external contractors when required. The position is full time and on a permanent basis, with room for progression over time; accommodation is available for candidates who require it.

In the last 10 years the 25-acre site has been developed and now boasts many spectacular elements to the gardens and grounds. The site includes expansive formal lawns, a lake, herbaceous borders, a walled vegetable garden growing a wide range of produce. More recently an orchard has been planted in the grounds, situated alongside parkland and woodland.

The principal duties of the Senior Gardener will be to carry out hands-on, year-round maintenance of the garden, landscaped grounds and planted areas of the Estate. Candidates will be expected to be part of the wider estate team and to assist the employer generally in whatever way needed; liaising with colleagues, contractors, and any other part time workers involved in ongoing activities to ensure a high standard of presentation.

The senior gardener must have excellent plant knowledge as well as a genuine hunger and excitement for creating stunning and unique gardens. The successful applicant will work to a high horticultural standard to continue to improve the borders, keep the kitchen garden productive and maintain the greenhouse and the different areas of the garden. Candidates will have a strong knowledge or all forms of garden management, including identifying specific maintenance duties and developing annual management plans for the gardens and implementing these within an agreed budget.

Applicants should ideally have a minimum level 2 horticultural qualification combined with excellent plant and tree knowledge and previous experience working on private estates.  Experience growing fruit and vegetables as well as specialist pruning is required for the role. Ability to operate a range of garden machinery and good craft skills are also desirable for the role. A full UK driving licence is essential.

The position is open to candidates looking for a live in or live out position. Accommodation can be provided on site and partners; children and pets are welcome.
