Hurst House

Experienced Senior Gardener required for a stunning 10 acre garden in East Sussex

We are seeking a professional experienced senior gardener reporting into our Head Gardener for our 10+ acre garden on a private 450 acre Estate in rural countryside near Battle, East Sussex.  Must have formal horticultural qualifications (minimum RHS level 2) and have worked at a senior level, ideally on a private estate, for at least 3 years. A chainsaw license (CS30/31) and spraying certificates (PA1/PA6) are desirable and a full and current driving licence is essential. Candidates should also be well-versed in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.

First and foremost, the ideal candidate should have excellent plant knowledge and be very confident in their horticultural abilities in terms of seasonal practices, plant identification skills and the effective use of plants in relation to their environment.

Applicants must be very well organised, energetic with a high level of physical fitness and have a fine eye for detail.   This is a hands-on role reporting into the Head Gardener and would suit someone who still wishes to make their mark on a garden that is constantly developing as we are open to new ideas and projects whilst recognising the importance of the role of maintenance in a well established and much admired garden.

Extensive practical knowledge and experience is required with regard to herbaceous, roses, pruning, pests and diseases, trees, propagation and glasshouse work.

The garden is a mix of many different areas – formal herbaceous and rose beds surrounded by yew hedging, mature and new shrubberies, a herb garden, a large kitchen and cutting garden, a fernery, jungle garden, fruit trees and bushes, a rill, swimming pool and tennis court, a very large glasshouse and polytunnel, wildflower meadow and some woodland.  There are several large areas of lawn.  There are also a lot of established rhododendrons which frame the garden.  The jungle garden is relatively new having been planted in 2009 with planting that is based on the Lost Gardens of Heligan.

The garden is occasionally opened for charity and/or the local garden society and has always received many compliments.   The main house was built c1680 so the garden has been here for a long time but was very run down when the Estate was purchased in 2003 and investment in it is an ongoing process.  We are very involved in our garden in terms of discussing any new plans but we would always want our Senior Gardener to have a positive ‘can do’ attitude and have a friendly, open and honest personality.

There is a large enclosed barn, several garages, an open barn, a yard area with large compost bays and, of course, all the equipment you would expect on a working Estate.   The property is also part of the AONB and has the close proximity of a large ancient woodland.   All in all, and including this ancient woodland, the Estate is c450 acres.

The Senior Gardener’s accommodation is a 2 bedroomed, 2 bathroom gatehouse in excellent condition with its own garage and small courtyard.   Also living on the Estate is the Head Gardener and an Estate Manager.   As we all live on the Estate it is vital that staff are always security conscious and that everyone works well and respects each other and are part of a team – that mutual respect, of course, is also important for us as owners/employers.

If this is a role that you believe would suit you and your professional and physical skills, an excellent remuneration package would be offered to the right candidate plus discretionary bonus and dependent on experience and qualifications.

Please apply, enclosing a c.v. to:  Senior Gardener Vacancy, Hurst House, Hurst Lane, Sedlescombe, East Sussex TN33 OPE or email to: heather@originalsource.net
