Market Gardener

A rare and fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Gardener with a passion for or a keen interest in market gardening to join a knowledgeable team developing and expanding a large market garden on a sizeable estate in Hampshire. From herbs, vegetables, and fruit, to stunning scented flowers, the Market Garden is a central part of the large estate.  

The certified organic and biodynamic market garden is set over 5 acres, with a large state-of-the-art propagation glasshouse and five polytunnels supporting the vegetable and soft fruit growing that supplies two restaurants with beautiful, truly seasonal, and delicious produce. There is also a young orchard, with more than 500 apple, pear, and stoned fruit trees, which is presently home to bees and chickens. The estate also grows an acre of cut flowers. The market garden does everything from sowing seed, weeding, planting, and harvesting by hand. The mission is to grow the finest varieties of the finest fruits, vegetables, and herbs. These may be traditional or non-traditional. The garden is maintained organically, and all produce are grown sustainably.

The market garden is set within a 340-acre farm, a mixed arable and livestock farm that is certified organic and follows biodynamic principles. Home to Suffolk Sheep, saddleback pigs that graze the land, and flocks of chickens that supply eggs. There is also a herd of Guernsey cows which arrived in late 2019 along with a purpose build dairy to produce home made unpasteurised milk, butter, cream, yoghurt and in the future, cheese.  The farm is a thriving natural environment where visitors are encouraged to be inspired and engage in

If you are a gardener with a love for growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs, this is an incredible opportunity to join a fantastic project at a very exciting time. The successful candidate will be guided by the experienced market gardeners and will be involved in the maintenance and monitoring of crops, pest and disease control, planting and the ongoing aftercare of crops, ground preparation, propagation from seed, cuttings of division, harvesting cleaning and packing.  The team will continue to develop the market garden of scale, productivity, diversity, and beauty using the most effective sustainable methods.

Applicants for this role should have growing experience and be willing and able to follow the clients organic and biodynamic approach. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to be involved in a progressive and creative farm to table project. Some horticultural knowledge or experience working in a kitchen garden, or on an allotment is required. Good communication skills are important to work well with the team throughout the development of the garden and to supply the required fruit and vegetables. The successful candidate will be organised, have good attention to detail and enjoy working to a high standard.

SALARY:  Up to £25,000 DOE
