Kitchen and Ornamental Borders Gardener

The fruit and vegetable walled garden holds an array of delights throughout the growing season.  The garden supplies the House with fresh edibles including tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, beetroot, carrots along with sweetcorn, aubergine, melons and winter treats like brussel sprouts, celeriac, squash, leeks and many more.  The greenhouses also provide floral colour for the House in both cutting flowers and plants.

Gardens Supervisor

Duties

  • To carry out the tasks of maintenance and construction within the Gardens, as directed.  These will be mostly but not entirely concerned with:
  • To be responsible of the day-to-day operations of the greenhouses and cold frames.
  • To be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the fruit cages.
  • To prepare and circulate a list of fruits and vegetables which are ready to harvest.
  • To cut and prepare table and other arrangements for the house as and when required.
  • Assisting in the seasonal maintenance of the shrub and herbaceous beds and borders and the wall grown plants and vegetable garden etc.
  • Assistance with the maintenance of paths, drives and waterways.
  • Weed control using knapsack and hand-held sprayers and manual equipment, provided that the relevant certification for the provider is in place and up to date, and only under the strict authorisation of the Garden Supervisor.
  • Grass cutting using ride-on, pedestrian operated and hand-held machinery and equipment as and when required.
  • Other seasonal tasks to do with the overall repair and tidiness of the Gardens at the direction of the Garden Supervisor.
  • To properly maintain before and after use any garden machinery use.
  • To work closely, when required, with Estate Staff from other Departments or with Contractors from time to time appointed to carry out work within the Gardens.
  • To adhere to the Health and Safety regulations and to advise the Gardens Supervisor of any possible breaches of or improvements to them.
  • From time to time undertake to cover; due to holidays, sickness or the absence from work, tasks normally undertaken by other members of staff.
  • To report any damage or defects to buildings, machinery, fences or drains and waterways.
  • To occasionally attend such training Courses as the Gardens Supervisor, the Rural Estate Manager or owner.
  • To be aware of the historic and conservation values of the Gardens and Park.
  • To be vigilant at all times in matters of security and report any suspicious activity immediately to the Gardens Supervisor.
  • To carry out occasional weekend duties (watering, opening/closing of greenhouse, chickens, weather station monitoring etc) as directed by the Gardens Supervisor.
  • To assist with the various Estate events as and when required as directed by the Gardens Supervisor.

Working hours are 39 hours per week Monday to Friday with weekend overtime.
