Head Gardener

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented horticulturist to join one of the country’s most beautiful historic estates on a full-time permanent basis.  This position is based in Northamptonshire and will suit an experienced Senior Gardener looking to take the next step in their career, or an existing Head Gardener with the experience, passion and desire to take on an exciting restoration project of the walled garden.

The 5-acre walled garden is about to undergo significant restoration to bring it back to its former glory and original purpose growing cut flowers, fruit and vegetables for the house and the owners are looking for a Head Gardener to lead the development. They will manage a team of 4 gardeners with the opportunity to further expand the team in the future if required. Three incredible historic glasshouses are to be reinstated and the Head Gardener will have access to historic records of the garden and plants.

The role will involve the running, development, management and thereafter maintenance of walled garden on a year-round basis.  Knowledge of productive horticulture including succession planting and drawing up of associated charts, cultivation of cut flowers, vegetables, fruit, herbs, edible flowers and micro herbs will be required as well as experience of propagation and the use of garden machinery.  A good working knowledge of organic pest and disease management and good plant husbandry is also essential. The gardens are meticulously planned and will be managed to ensure efficiency and maintenance of the highest standards of horticulture and presentation.

Applicants for this role must have extensive horticultural knowledge and the continuous supply of high-quality flowers and produce throughout the year.  Clear and regular communication with the house is important throughout.

This opportunity will suit an experienced and qualified horticulturist with excellent attention to detail, with garden planning and staff supervision experience. Suitable applicants will possess academic horticultural qualifications and experience in horticulturally diverse gardens, good physical fitness, and excellent plant identification and management skills.  Applicants should be equally passionate, energetic and experienced hands-on professionals. Practical experience with a range of garden machinery is desired.
