Head Gardener
Experienced full time Head Gardener required for a well-established private country estate in North Yorkshire.
The successful applicant will possess a wide range of skills developed in a similar senior position, including excellent knowledge of gardening and plantmanship. The candidate would be expected to be hands-on and undertake a variety of gardening tasks as well as manage a small gardening team.
The site comprises of developed grounds, including trees, shrubs, formal hedges, greenhouses, roses, lawns, ponds, and herbaceous beds all requiring year-round attention.
MAIN DUTIES
- Reporting directly to the owner, the Head Gardener is responsible for maintaining all grounds and gardens to the highest standards possible.
- Management of a small gardening team including the day-to-day allocation of work to the team and any sub-contractors. Ability to work well as part of a team with colleagues from the wider estate.
- Plan and schedule seasonal maintenance to include lawns, shrubs, borders, planters, hedges, ponds, trees, and weed / pest control.
- Use of strong design skills to plan, order and plant the Property’s bedding displays.
- Proactively identify areas where the garden can be improved or where current maintenance / working practices can be reviewed.
- Competent use and maintenance of a wide range of hand tools and horticultural machinery including small tractors, lawn mowers, strimmers, leaf blowers and hedge cutters.
- Ensure all gardening work is undertaken safely and conforms with Health & Safety legislation.
- Garden administration, including scheduling and organising machinery servicing, sourcing gardening maintenance materials and equipment, plants, and supplies.
- Ad hoc duties comprising of tasks in the main property.
Key Skills, Qualities & Experience
- The successful individual will be enthusiastic, self-motivated and present themselves professionally.
- Experience (min.3 years) and good knowledge of plants and horticultural practices including competent use of machinery.
- Spraying (PA1/PA6) certificates are desirable.
- Full driving licence

Salary (including pension) will be attractive and is commensurate with experience as no accommodation is offered it is hoped the candidate would live within a sensible travelling distance.
Hours: 8am-5pm Monday to Friday with total breaks of 1 hour
28 days holiday, including bank holidays.
