Head Gardener required

Brocklesby Park is a rural estate in northern Lincolnshire. At its heart is Brocklesby Hall, the private residence of The Earl and Countess of Yarborough.

The gardens surrounding it include a large walled kitchen garden (organic status), greenhouses, flower gardens, extensive grounds, lawned areas and fine lawns, woodland, a lake, fountain, follies, formal hedges, churchyard, wildflower meadow, orchard, tennis court, biomass boiler etc.

A full-time experienced Head Gardener is sought and the main purpose of the role is the day to day running and upkeep of the grounds and gardens.

  • Lead, motivate, support and work collaboratively with a team of three gardeners and occasional part-time staff.
  • Liaise with garden adviser, contractors and other departments.
  • Supply fruit, vegetables and cut flowers from the walled garden to the Hall.
  • Have glasshouse and propagating experience.
  • Competent in landscaping works, redesigning of flower gardens and herbaceous borders.
  • Maintain extensive lawns including fine lawn areas.
  • Upkeep of verges and hedges.
  • Hold chainsaw and spraying qualifications ideally.
  • Responsibility for flock of hens and a colony of bees.
  • Host occasional garden open days/tours, and annual Country Fair.
  • Decorate church and village hall for various estate functions.
  • Maintain weather records.
  • Possess Knowledge of cut flower arranging.
  • Have a possible interest in arboretum style tree planting and care.
  • Conversant with Health & Safety protocols, risk assessments and safe working environments.
  • Ordering of all supplies/knowledge of good suppliers

The candidate will ideally be RHS qualified, combined with a hands-on practical approach with a proven track record of managing and inspiring staff, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Close liaison with other estate departments.

A good organiser and planner, promoting effective and productive working practices.

Can demonstrate sound machinery experience.

Enthusiastic, tenacious, energetic, self-motivated.

Positive ‘can-do’ attitude.

Physically fit, energetic.

Demonstrate innovation and suggest improvements.

Avoid waste, control costs, and recycle.

Applicants should be experienced gardeners with a sound understanding of seasonal horticultural practices, extensive plant knowledge and have a general desire to present and maintain the gardens to the highest level, in line with the Owners’ vision and high standards. Ideally they will have an eye for detail and know what needs doing without being prompted.

  • Salary £30,000 pa
