An attractive opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to manage and maintain a beautiful traditional English garden near Alresford in Hampshire.  The role is permanent and would suit a personable and driven horticulturist with a flexible and positive attitude towards their work.  The position is offered as a 4 day per week post with the opportunity to increase to 5 days in the future.

The gardens were originally laid out in 1911 and have been extensively redesigned 5 years ago. The stunning 8-acre formal gardens are kept private and are made up of a 2-acre walled garden compromising of 2 ornamental ‘rooms’, orchard, vegetable garden that includes raised beds and polytunnel, glass house with tropical plants and fruits, extensive lawns, a variety of trees, pond, four fountains, tennis court and a Japanese ornamental cascade in the woodland garden to be restored.

The new Head Gardener will be responsible for management and enhancement of the gardens in general as well as manage a team of one full time groundskeeper /handyman and two part time gardeners, who can provide assistance in the garden as necessary. He / She will be hands on in their role and nurture and lead the team.

Applicants must have excellent plant knowledge and ideally hold a horticultural qualification to a level 2 or above, experience with plant propagation, kitchen gardening, garden staff management, and be competent in the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery.  He / She will have a solid understanding of horticulture and an in-depth knowledge needed for planting schemes as well as have an excellent understanding of the seasons and specialist pruning knowledge to execute and carry out the role to a high horticultural standard.
