  • Salary: Up to £40,000 DOE

An opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener to join a close-knit team on a charming, 76-acre estate in the north of Fife, Scotland. With rolling views of the countryside, the gardens of this private home are due for development, with plans being drawn up to turn them into something truly spectacular, giving the Head Gardener the chance to put their creative stamp on an exciting new project.

Currently, there is a traditional terraced area with flower beds throughout, which is to be formalised, and a modest kitchen garden producing fruit and vegetables. This will be developed further and moved into a walled garden, inclusive of a glasshouse, once created. The property boasts 3 ponds which are surrounded by planting, a woodland area and extensive lawns to be maintained. Due to the developmental nature of the vacancy, the Head Gardener will benefit from fantastic opportunities for growth and personal development.

The Head Gardener will be working with a garden designer to establish and develop the formal gardens, as well as overseeing a junior gardener and external contractors, whilst collaborating effectively with the estate manager. The successful applicant should be familiar with development projects of this scale and bring with them an excellent plant knowledge. To ensure the continued productivity of the kitchen garden, the individual should be well versed in growing fruits and vegetables, with an understanding of propagation. The role is to include general maintenance duties such as mowing, strimming and hedge cutting.

The estate has invested well in their collection of gardening tools and machinery, so candidates should have experience with a wide range of equipment, with the ability to take proper care of these and maintain them between services. It is essential for the individual to have a full driving license and access to a personal vehicle due to the remote location. PA1/6 spraying certificates and a chainsaw certificate would be advantageous but not essential. The working hours for this position are 8:00am – 4:30pm, Monday to Friday, and the position will be offered subject to a successful DBS check, as well as signing a confidentiality agreement.

There is a 1-bedroom flat adjoining the property which has been recently renovated and is offered as accommodation with the role. Partners and well-behaved pets are welcome, and all rent and utility bills are covered by the employer.
