Head Gardener
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener for an award winning historic garden.
Elton Hall has been in the same family for 400 years and sits in the beautiful Nene valley on the Cambridgeshire/Northamptonshire border. It is a family home, open to the public during the summer months and for some events. The gardens include formal lawns, herbaceous borders, an Orangery, Flower Garden, water features, Shrub Garden, Arboretum, Wilderness Garden, box and yew hedges and magnificent topiary.
The successful applicant will possess proven horticultural knowledge and experience, (RHS qualification preferred but not essential). Some experience in the historic gardens sector would be an advantage. Excellent organisational and time management skills are essential, and the Head Gardener must be willing to act as an ambassador for Elton Hall through the delivery of occasional garden talks and guided tours. Key Requirements:
To maintain, restore and improve the existing gardens
Lead, direct and supervise the Assistant Gardener & PT gardening team
Have experience of all types of garden machinery
Know how to propagate cuttings, e.g. pelargoniums, salvias and other seasonal flowers/shrubs
A good plants person used to extensive herbaceous borders
Well used to pruning climbers (wisteria, roses, vines etc) & Spring & Summer shrubs
Fluent English & UK driving licence
Key Information:
Permanent, full time 28 days holiday
Competitive salary £38,000 + DOE
The option of accommodation in a three-bedroom house a short walk from the gardens (incl. council tax & water rates)
