Gardener

A great opportunity for a passionate individual to join a family owned and managed Estate in Sussex.  The gardens are currently managed by the Head Gardener along with input from the owners and some part time staff.

The Estate comprises stunning woodlands and extensive pasture stretching over 500 acres.  In the immediate vicinity of the property there are over 15 acres of private gardens containing formal areas, lawns, two lakes, a stream, orchard, kitchen garden, greenhouse as well as other self-contained gardens.  The family vision is to achieve an Estate that is highly sustainable, supports a rich array of biodiversity whilst also being maintained to a high standard.  The family have a strong ecological approach to gardening promoting organic practices and conservation opportunities wherever possible.

The house and the gardens are currently undergoing a significant renovation project which will include re-developing many areas of the garden, building a walled kitchen garden, constructing a new glasshouse, potting shed and nursery, and installing a rainwater irrigation system.

The Gardener’s main role will be to work with the Head Gardener on maintenance of the current areas. Day to day duties will include strimming, pruning, irrigation, weeding, work in the vegetable garden and orchard, propagation, and hedge trimming. The role will also involve supporting the Head Gardener to implement new designs as well as siting trees, shrub beds and wildflower meadows.

The ideal candidate will be someone with a strong passion for gardening, a desire to be a part of a large-scale garden renovation project, they will be able to take instruction, work independently and have a strong attention to detail. This is a fantastic opportunity for a gardener with a qualification and/or suitable experience looking to develop their skills and knowledge working on a private estate.

Essential skills for the ideal applicant are the willingness to take instruction implement tasks independently and have the ability to work well within a small team. Candidates will be physically fit and have a positive and flexible attitude.

Desirable but not essential skills are basic garden equipment maintenance skills, experience working with an organic system, Glasshouse/propagation experience, basic maintenance, and DIY ability, first aid qualification and a driving licence.

Working hours will comprise 40 hours per week, working time can be flexible but suggested hours are Monday to Friday, 8am – 5pm; with 45 minutes lunch break and two 15-minute tea breaks.  No scheduled weekend working is required but occasional work outside of the fixed hours may be necessary. Holiday entitlements will be 25 days per annum plus public holidays.

SALARY:  £24,000 to £26,000 DOE
