We are looking for an energetic and enthusiastic Gardener to support the Head Gardener and Garden team in the day to day running of the garden and grounds here at Overbury Estate.
Overbury Court has a historic garden that has been open through the National Garden Scheme since 1927. The main house is situated within a Grade II* listed Park and Garden, the parkland surrounding the house was mainly set out when the current Overbury Court was built, although the family have maintained and enhanced over the last 300 years.
The garden comprimises of ornamental lawns, formal hedging, topiary, a series of rills and ponds, a Victorian woodland grotto created by Sir Richard Biddulph Martin, a column garden by James Alexander-Sinclair and a large ‘silver & gold’ border originally set out by Peter Coats. Most recently the rose garden has been refurbished and is currently being used for stunning temporary summer displays. Alongside these areas, there is an historic walled kitchen garden, which is now an orchard with a variety of apples, pears, quince and medlar underplanted with spring bulbs. Recently we have increased the planting on the West Bank, which is a spring bulb meadow now also featuring a significant number of orchids. There are also a wide variety of other mixed borders and specimen trees.
Overbury Court has an additional walled garden, which has a greenhouse, polytunnel, cold frames, nursery beds, fruit cage and the productive beds themselves. The walled garden is also the home to our cut flower stock that is used by the florist across many of the businesses as well as within the main house. These facilities allow the team to propagate our own stock plants and this year we trialled a biodynamic approach with our seed sewing and planting out.
The role will involve daily maintenance of the Court garden at Overbury as well as the gardens in the wider estate. The court gardens are of historical eminence and include formal lawns, expansive formal hedging, topiary, a rose walk, sumptuous herbaceous borders and a woodland grotto. As well as looking after the Court Garden the role will also include the upkeep of the wider estate and working with other departments such as the forestry team.
The role would suit someone with an energetic and strong work ethic coupled with a passion for plants. This role also requires a degree of artistic flare, a keen eye for detail and great observational skills. As well as the ability to work well within a team, the successful candidate will work alongside the local residents and the public who enjoy walking around our beautiful estate. We would be able to offer assistance with housing for the right candidate.
