CJ Hoskins

We are looking for an all-round gardener, either with foundation experience which they’re looking to develop further, or an experienced gardener looking to be part of an exciting project. Ordinarily this role involves working with a garden and grounds team on a private estate, east of Cirencester, five days a week. The current garden is set within the grounds of a beautiful Grade I listed manor house and consists of formal lawns, herbaceous and shrub borders, a walled garden with a greenhouse, a wildflower meadow, informal mowed park with specimen trees and mixed woodland. However, the current formal garden will be extensively renovated in the coming years, so it’s an exciting role to be part of this process.

Responsibilities

You will be helping to maintain the gardens and grounds, performing a variety of tasks, including but not limited to planting, propagating, weeding, pruning, deadheading, mowing, hedge cutting, mulching, scarifying, spraying, and strimming. In the longer term, you will have the opportunity to be part of the team developing the new garden design by a leading garden designer.

The successful candidate needs to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Enthusiasm and passion for gardening, with a good work ethic and a keen eye for detail.
  • Good plant and species knowledge with the aptitude to learn and develop this knowledge further (we are also open to receiving applications from very experienced candidates too).
  • Sound practical gardening/horticultural experience.
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills.
  • Operate well as part of a team and equally be sufficiently self-motivated to work alone as experience grows.
  • A flexible and positive approach to challenges.
  • Formal horticultural training would be advantageous but not essential.
  • A good knowledge and application of Health and Safety compliance.
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use.
  • Full and clean driving licence.
