Website English Country Gardeners

Experienced Gardener required

We seek applications for the above position on a large equestrian Estate in Berkshire.

The 80-acre estate which has many outstanding features is currently undergoing considerable upgrading with a number of new hard landscaping projects being carried out by external contractors. The formal gardens are well laid out and include box hedging, topiary, ornamental lawns as well as herbaceous borders. In addition, there are areas of woodland plus a 3-acre kitchen garden. The owners have appointed a garden designer, and a number of new planting schemes are planned for next year. The gardens and grounds are generally separate from the equestrian side of the Estate.

In addition to good horticultural knowledge and excellent practical gardening skills, applicants must also have experience of working on a private estate. It is important that you are well organised with the ability to work closely with and help co-ordinate the work of outside contractors. You should be familiar with the safe use and general maintenance of most types of garden machinery.

Applicants must be willing to expand their knowledge and skills in order to be part of the wider estate team, as well as having the enthusiasm and ability to eventually progress into the Head Gardener role. You will report to the Estate Manager.

A driving licence is essential along with PA1 and PA6 spraying qualifications. You will need to be comfortable around animals as the owners have dogs, horses, sheep and chickens.

Hours of work 08:00 – 16:30 Mon-Fri, Holidays 28 days including bank holidays.

SALARY:       Up to £30K (depending on experience)

LOCATION:  Reading
