Estate Gardener Vacancy
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced full-time/part-time Estate Gardener to join our expanding gardens team at Mawley Hall and Kinlet Hall, privately owned rural estates in South Shropshire. The house, gardens, and wider estate are undergoing major restoration and redevelopment. The gardens currently consist of ornamental lawns, shrub and herbaceous beds, woodland garden, productive garden, nursery area, and polytunnels. Further ornamental gardens are being established and the restoration of the walled gardens and glasshouses is underway. The estate also has extensive woodlands and a tree nursery, and is planting a large number of trees.
Skilled, knowledgeable and motivated horticulturalists, with experience covering all areas of ornamental gardening including formative pruning, an understanding of irrigation systems, plant databases and establishing newly designed gardens are encouraged to apply. You will be working with the gardens team to maintain and develop the gardens, grounds, and the wider estate to the highest horticultural standards. If you are an experienced and passionate craft gardener, then you will work with the lead productive gardener to produce seasonal vegetables, fruit, and cut flowers for the house and wider estate whilst supporting the gardens team and ornamental gardeners. Following organic principles with biodiversity in mind, you will have proficiency in fruit, vegetables, greenhouses/polytunnels and cut flower production.
Skills and Experience
• Minimum of two years of horticultural work experience in a private estate, historic, botanic or kitchen garden setting.
• Broad-ranging horticultural expertise and excellent plant knowledge with evidence of appropriate academic qualifications or experience.
• Minimum horticultural qualification to Level 2 (NVQ/RHS or equivalent).
• A well-organised individual with attention to detail and a keenness to provide the highest standards of presentation.
• A practical, hands-on, hard-working gardener with excellent teamworking and communication skills.
• Capable to take responsibility and work on own initiative.
• Full and clean UK driving licence.
• Experience of driving compact tractors, attachments and using a wide range of tools and equipment including ride-on mowers.
• Basic machinery maintenance knowledge.
• PA1 & PA6 certificates desirable.
40 hours per week 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri. Occasional weekend watering duties may be required with time off in lieu.
The salary package will be competitive and commensurate with ability and experience.
28 days holiday per annum, inclusive of Bank Holidays.
