Deputy Head Gardener

A self-motivated and experienced deputy head gardener is sought on a full time and permanent basis for a diverse trials garden in East Sussex. The garden is a private family garden but is open to the public on specified days each year. Plants are grown, trialled, and photographed here for the owner’s catalogue and website.

The deputy head gardener will work within the genial and inclusive team and work in all areas of the intensively planted 3-acre garden, including the annual and perennial cutting gardens, the dahlia gardens, the rose gardens, the vegetable garden plus all other areas. The role requires good plant knowledge and year-round upkeep as well as day to day care of a busy garden. A good eye for the continual evolution of the garden will be required

The ideal candidate will have excellent record keeping skills including tracking of all new trial lines from goods in to final analysis of grown plants. He / She will ensure all health & safety guidelines are apparent to all staff and are adhered to. Experience in a supervisory role within a garden setting is essential and the ability to turn your hand to anything including helping to run open days. It is important that the deputy head gardener has good communication skills within the team and face to face with visitors and has the ability to organise workloads and staff in the absence of the Head Gardener. A horticultural qualification will be an advantage.

The daily hours run from 08.30 – 17.00, some extra hours may be required during the height of the season. The role will start at the beginning of March 2022.

SALARY:        £26,000 – 29,000 depending on experience
