Assistant Head Gardener
We have a full time permanent vacancy for an assistant head gardener to be part of a small team working in a beautiful and established private garden in rural Wiltshire in the SN8 area near the village of Great Bedwyn. The estate covers around 50 acres in total with around 6 acres dedicated to the garden to varying degrees of formality.
The candidate would ideally have a formal horticultural qualification RHS/NVQ level 2 or 3 backed up with a wide range of practical experience. The role will involve working alongside the head gardener looking after and developing the garden as well as looking after specific areas of the garden managing a small team assisting you and running the garden in the absence of the head gardener so some management / leadership skills would be an advantage. We would consider an experienced gardener looking to further their career who is willing to take on the further responsibilities involved in this position.
The work is varied and carried out to a high standard. The garden consists of a formal rose garden, glass houses, lawns, shrub, herbaceous and herb borders, areas for vegetables, fruit and cut flowers, topiary and there are also wilder areas including a new stumpery and we continue to develop and add to the garden. The suitable candidate should be able to demonstrate the horticultural skills needed to look after these areas and the wider estate, everything from weeding, pruning, planting, mulching, propagation, watering, grass cutting, strimming, hedge cutting, have a good eye for detail, be proactive, work as part of a team and be able to work independently. Physical fitness is essential as is the ability to safely operate garden machinery, a chainsaw certificate would be beneficial.
We operate a 40 hour week Monday to Friday with some overtime / weekend watering duties when required, 28 days holiday including bank holidays, employer pension scheme and clothing allowance. You will need to have your own transport due to our rural location.
Salary: £34,000
