Head Gardener

An exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and experienced full time Head Gardener to head the outdoor team at a 50 acre estate near Honiton in East Devon.

The estate has formal gardens including lawns, borders, a formal rose garden, woodland garden, cutting garden, vegetable garden, herb garden, fruit cage, green house and polytunnel.  The wider grounds include parkland, woodland, fields, stream, and a small lake.

The successful applicant will have excellent knowledge of all aspects of horticulture and past experience of managing a similar estate.  They will be able to work harmoniously as part of an established larger staff team, and also be able to take charge and lead their own team of outdoor workers.  They will be a happy, enthusiastic, and pro-active individual, able to work independently but also happy to take direction. They should have a keen eye for detail and top standards.

Working hours are 45-hour week, with flexibility on days and times depending on the season and projects being undertaken.  Some weekend work may be required.

Duties and responsibilities
Maintaining and developing the formal gardens including lawns, hedging, formal beds, herbaceous borders, topiary, a walled garden, glasshouse, rose gardens, a pond, stream and a small lake.
Cultivation of fruit and vegetables, growing many from seed
All aspects of lawn and plant care, including pest and disease identification, feeding, pruning, watering and weeding.
Responsibility for an outdoor team who carry out skilled gardening, general garden and grounds maintenance work
Working to agreed budgets and maintaining records
Responsible for liaising with outdoor contractors where necessary.
Occasional support to colleagues where appropriate.
Any other duties requested, appropriate to the role.

Profile requirement
Previous experience working as a head gardener for a private family
Experience of working in formal gardens as well as larger estates.
A keen eye for detail and knowledge of plants, trees, fruit and vegetables
Full driver’s licence
Hard-working, reliable, flexible and self-motivated
