Experienced Gardener

  • Live In
  • Circa £22,000-£26,000 DOE
  • Norfolk

A very attractive opportunity has arisen for a skilled and experienced gardener in a beautiful private garden in central Norfolk on a live in or out, permanent basis.  The successful applicant will work alongside the owners and existing full-time Groundsman.  Applicants for this vacancy must have extensive hands-on experience working in a large private garden with comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of garden plants and their maintenance.

The five-acre formal gardens contain herbaceous borders, shrub borders, and a kitchen garden with fruit trees (including pleached limes).  The estate propagates most of their own plants for the borders and pots in greenhouses on site, as well as some fruit and select vegetables, cut flowers and interesting plants for the main house.

The garden is surrounded by a ten-acre arboretum and farm.  The Experienced Gardener should be competent with the operation and basic maintenance of garden machinery and be willing to assist the Groundsman as required.  Applicants must be willing and able to carry out all aspects of estate gardening including pruning (some from ladders), plant propagation and glasshouse work, planting, weeding and general garden maintenance duties.  Possession of spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be beneficial, and a full UK driving licence essential.  Applicants must be physically fit, non-smokers, have excellent horticultural knowledge, and preferably, academic horticultural qualifications at RHS level 3 or above, as well as being someone with a love of gardening who takes pride in their work.

Applicants must be flexible insofar as estate gardening is concerned, i.e. be able to manage/assist with common minor estate duties, as well as being able to work on their own.  The opportunity exists for a housekeeper to take on some part-time work and as such, suitable couples are also encouraged to apply.

A three-bedroom house is available (strictly no smoking) for the successful applicant (and family if applicable) at a nominal rent of £250 per year (£20.83/month).  The successful applicant would be expected to pay their own council tax and utilities.  A small and well-behaved dog is welcome, but cats are not permitted due to the abundant bird population.  As this vacancy is in Norfolk, applicants will need to be certain that they would be happy to live in East Anglia.
