Estate Gardener

  • Live Out
  • Circa £30,000 DOE
  • Gloucestershire

An exciting career advancement opportunity has arisen on a beautiful private estate in Gloucestershire, on a full-time permanent basis.  This role will suit an energetic, practically minded and hardworking gardener with a well-rounded skill set.

The stunning Grade II listed manor house dates from the 16th Century and encompasses a total of 60-acres overall.  The property includes expansive areas of parkland and woodland with lakes and ornamental ponds, and a Trout river.  The formal garden of 3-acres includes a tennis court and swimming pool, a topiary walk, wild banks, a small kitchen garden, glasshouse and an orchard, as well as variety or ornamental plants, with hedges and lawn throughout.

The garden is designed by a celebrated and well-respected garden designer.  The garden and estate are managed by the Head Gardener. The current vacancy replaces a long time co-worker who has sadly recently passed away.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to eventually step up into the primary role, at which point they will be well-versed with the workings of the estate having shadowed the current time-served and knowledgeable Head Gardener.

Daily duties will involve all aspects of horticulture and garden management, i.e. lawn management, hedge cutting, planting, pruning, feeding and weeding, basic plant healthcare, plant propagation/glasshouse work and a small amount of kitchen gardening.  Typical estate duties will also be asked of the successful applicant, such as chainsaw operation/preparation of firewood, repair of fences, general management of a biomass boiler and other similar tasks to ensure the smooth running of the estate.

Applicants must be experienced and well-rounded estate gardeners with good horticultural knowledge and a character that is rewarded by hard work.  Physical fitness and energy are a prerequisite for the role as the work can be physically demanding, yet varied and interesting.  Candidates will ideally hold an academic horticultural qualification at Level 2 or above, though demonstrable and relevant experience will also be taken into account.  A strong knowledge of species-specific pruning and training, plant identification and seasonal garden management is required, as is a chainsaw certificate and competence with a range of garden machinery.  A full driving licence is essential as the property is located rurally.

This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic hands-on estate gardener to work towards a step up in their career whilst enjoying the outdoors lifestyle that accompanies this varied role, on a beautiful historic private estate.
