Assistant Gardener

  • Live Out
  • £23,000 - £26,000 DOE
  • Hampshire

A wonderful career opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Gardener in the New Forest, Hampshire. Candidates with a good level of all-round estate maintenance experience, i.e. machinery maintenance, swimming pools, animal care etc. in addition to garden maintenance, are encouraged to apply.

This stunning listed private country house includes several smaller cottages and 5-acre formal garden.  The main property is nestled within 180 acres of parkland in the beautiful New Forest in south west England.  The village of Bramshaw is a highly sought-after location; close to Lyndhurst and the historic market town of Romsey.

The property is under ownership of a young and friendly family who are actively developing the already stunning gardens.  The main garden includes a cuttings garden, greenhouses, a vegetable garden to supply the house with a small amount of produce, formal lawn areas, hedges, mature trees, mixed borders, a pool and tennis court.  Staff currently working on the estate include a Head Gardener, House Manager/Chef, Assistant Gardener/Nanny, Groom, Gamekeeper, Junior Butler and cleaning staff.

The role will involve general garden maintenance; hedge cutting, mowing, weeding, dead heading, pruning etc. as well as working with roses, the beds/borders, the cutting flower garden and within the kitchen garden.  Applicants should have a good level of experience in general garden maintenance and a willingness to improve their horticultural knowledge where necessary, via training provided by the estate if required.  The suitable candidate will be positive in character and be willing to work within a small friendly team, but should also be happy to work autonomously in certain areas of the garden where required.  A spray certificate would be beneficial but is not essential for the role initially as training may be provided.  Applicants should be willing and able to carry out a range of general estate DIY tasks as well as gardening, so candidates with a broad skill set in this area are encouraged to apply.  The estate has the capacity to improve employees’ horticultural knowledge via internal and external training.

The successful applicant for this role will assist the Head Gardener in the routine maintenance, restoration and ongoing development of the garden on a permanent basis.  Candidates will ideally hold a recognised academic horticultural qualification, good/basic horticultural knowledge and gardening experience, and will ideally be from a private estate gardening or estate maintenance background.  Applicants should have good physical fitness and practical horticultural skills including competence with garden machinery.

The client is looking for a friendly, flexible, positive and enthusiastic person to be part of the estate on a long-term basis.  A rich and enjoyable atmosphere awaits the successful candidate, as does a genuine opportunity to upskill under the direction of a talented Head Gardener and if necessary, external horticultural training.  Applicants must be commutable to Bramshaw in Hampshire and must hold a full UK driving licence with their own transport.
