SUMMARY:Goldsborough Hall - Historic Houses Tour
DESCRIPTION:Goldsborough Hall\, built in the 1620s\, is  renowned for its Jacobean architecture and magnificent Robert Adam interiors. \nThe privately owned stately home stands in its own beautifully landscaped grounds with unspoilt elevated views over its historic gardens. Built for Sir Richard Hutton\, the acting Lord Chief Justice\, the hall was later remodelled in the 1750s by the eminent architects Robert Adam and John Carr of York. The house came to fame in the 1920s as the former residence of HRH Princess Mary (the Queen’s aunt)\, who lived here following her marriage to Viscount Lascelles (later the 6th earl of Harewood). \nInside\, the Jacobean Library is covered in 17th century oak-panelling with its elaborately painted plaster ceiling\, while the Dining Room and Drawing Rooms were redesigned by Robert Adams in the 18th century and include triumphal pillars and decorative cornices. The Dining Room also houses a vast 16th century soap stone overmantle decorated with biblical scenes. A 17th century oak staircase leads up the centre of the house. \nThe award-winning 12-acre gardens were laid out by Princess Mary with beech-lined herbaceous borders which stretch down to the Lime Tree Walk\, planted by royalty throughout the 1920s. A woodland walk during the Spring is awash with snowdrops\, winter aconites and daffodils.

If you would like to find out more specific information about the cancellations\, or about attending a certain future Historic Houses tour\, please contact pat.jacobs@historichouses.org or telephone 01946 690 823. \nGoadby Marwood Hall is a 17th-century Grade II* house next to a beautiful 13th-century church in a tiny village just north of Melton Mowbray. In 1750 a new Palladian-style south wing was built. The 180-acre estate was a subsidiary holding of the Duke of Rutland and often the residence of members of his family. \nIn 2000 it was inherited by Vicky Westropp. She and her husband have worked tirelessly\, restoring the neglected house and redesigning the garden\, based on 18th-century plans. Planted for year-round interest\, it boasts a chain of five lakes over ten acres and several interconnected walled gardens — a feast for the eye. Join the Westropps for a tour of their beautiful house and gardens. \nTour features\nGuided tours of the house and gardens. \nDirections\nGoadby Marwood Hall will be signed. House is  8 miles south of Grantham\, (A607 to Waltham\, turn right towards Eastwell\, then left towards Chadwell and enter village of Goadby Marwood.  Turn right down Towns Lane and iron gates 100 yards on left.  It is halfway between A1 and M1\, 4 miles north of Melton Mowbray. Plenty of parking. \nRefreshments\nNanny Kiss’s home made teas. \nAccess notes\nGround floor wheelchair friendly. Garden tour includes gravel paths and lawns. \nRestrictions\nNo dogs.
